May.27.2024

On May 25th, the academic exchange conference commemorating the 57th anniversary of the "523" project and the second academic seminar on pathogenic microorganism biosafety and artemisinin-based source elimination and malaria control, hosted by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, were held in Guangzhou. Attendees included Wu Zhendou, Director-General of the International Cooperation Department of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yang Longhui, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Ke Zhong, Deputy Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration of Guangdong Province, Yuan Guangxia, Consultant of the Exchange and Cooperation Office of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, Pan Huafeng, Vice President of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and Zheng Chuan, Vice President of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, among others.

Wu Zhendou, Director-General of the International Cooperation Department of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, delivered a speech.

Wu Zhendou stated that Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine should further utilize the existing cooperative foundation and resources, leverage the unique advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, strengthen cooperation with foreign institutions in the fields of medical treatment, education, research, and production, increase evidence-based medical research, and enhance the international influence and leadership of traditional Chinese medicine. The Artemisia Annua Anti-Malaria Team of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine should continue to carry forward the "523 Artemisia Annua Spirit," remain true to its original aspiration, and persevere in the global Artemisia Annua anti-malarial cause, making a significant contribution to supporting major-country diplomacy, ensuring the health of people in the "Belt and Road" countries, and promoting the construction of a global community of health for mankind.

Ke Zhong, Deputy Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration of Guangdong Province, delivered a speech.

Ke Zhong expressed his support for the provincial team to advance the implementation of the Artemisinin Malaria Control Project and promote research on Artemisinin malaria prevention and treatment strategies.

Pan Huafeng, Vice President of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, delivered a welcome speech.

Pan Huafeng warmly welcomed the leaders and experts, stating that the holding of the 57th Anniversary of the "523" Project Academic Exchange Conference is not only to commemorate the outstanding contributions of the predecessors but also to discuss the source control of malaria with Artemisinin under the new challenges of pathogen microorganism biosafety in the new era. It is hoped that this seminar will inspire new scientific research inspiration and promote academic innovation in traditional Chinese medicine.

Zheng Chuan , Vice President of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, delivered a speech.

Zheng Chuan expressed his firm support for the Artemisia Annua foreign aid medical work led by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and said that he would work side by side with everyone, actively participate in the further research of artemisinin against malaria, jointly promote the deep integration and application of traditional Chinese medicine in the field of global medical health, and share the mission of educating talents for the Party and the country; jointly solve the problems of national strategies and educational reform; and jointly plan new chapters for serving the society and industrial development.

At the meeting, Researcher Yang Longhui introduced the basic situation and achievements of the Artemisinin Research Center of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and sincerely hoped to strengthen exchanges and close cooperation with domestic units and experts engaged in Artemisinin and pathogen microorganisms, and work together to make due contributions to the inheritance and development of the artemisinin cause and addressing global public health challenges.

Professor Wang Xinhua reported on the clinical research of artemisinin and its compound prescriptions, and vividly and comprehensively recounted the review and enlightenment of the critical period of the international clinical research of artemisinin, combining his own in-depth experience of fighting malaria in Vietnam and other malaria-endemic regions in Asia and Africa. Researcher Song Jianping, director of the Artemisinin Research Center of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, introduced the innovation of the artemisinin compound prescriptions and malaria elimination and control plan undertaken by the Guangdong Artemisinin Anti-malaria Team since 1999, as well as the situation of undertaking national tasks. Over the past 20 years, the team has inherited the spirit of the "523" Project, fulfilled the mission of artemisinin, served the overall diplomacy of the country, and helped more than 10 countries including Cambodia, Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe, and Papua New Guinea to eliminate malaria, with relevant achievements benefiting hundreds of millions of people. Researcher Wang Jigang, deputy director of the Artemisinin Research Center of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Associate Professor Li Jian of Xiamen University delivered wonderful reports respectively on the theme of "Mechanism and Application of Artemisinin" and "Molecular Genetic Mechanism of Multiple Drug Resistance of Plasmodium Regulated by UBP1".

The "523" Project, as a major scientific and technological project in the history of our country, has pioneered the research and development of new anti-malarial drugs and made outstanding contributions to the global prevention and treatment of malaria. The discovery of Artemisinin is an even greater contribution of traditional Chinese medicine to the cause of human health, becoming the main force in the global anti-malarial effort. The conference promotes the great spirit of Artemisia Annua, commemorates the 57th anniversary of the national "523" Project, and also carries out in-depth academic discussions and exchanges around the important theme of pathogen microorganism biosafety and Artemisinin-based source elimination and malaria control, jointly exploring the innovation and development of Artemisia Annua research in the new development period.
