On June 15th, the First Meeting of the Academic Committee of Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of TCM and the First Innovation Forum on TCM Science and Technology convened in Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. Esteemed scholars, experts, and professors from the realm of Traditional Chinese Medicine converged, engaging in a profound dialogue on how to harness novel productive forces as catalysts for advancing the high-quality development of TCM's scientific research, technological innovations, and industrial landscape.
Academician Liu Liang, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Guangdong Laboratory of TCM, graciously attended and delivered the welcoming remarks. Also present at the gathering were esteemed academicians Yang Baofeng, Chen Kaixian, Zhang Boli, Li Lanjuan, Huang Luqi, Fang Jiancheng, Ma Jun, and Zhu Liguo, all members of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Huang Zhihao, Deputy Secretary of Zhuhai Municipal Party Committee and Mayor; Wen Zewei, Second-Class Inspector of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and Qiu Yue, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Traditional Chinese Medicine under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, attended the event and offered speeches on behalf of their respective organizations. Additionally, Chen Wenfeng, Party Secretary of GZUCM; Wang Wei, President of GZUCM; Zhang Zhongde, Vice President and President of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine ( Guangdong Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Sciences); GZUCM’s Vice President Liu Zhongqiu and Vice Presiden Wang Hongbin were all in attendance.
The opening ceremony smoothly conducted the appointment ceremony for the inaugural Academic Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of TCM. Professor Yang Baofeng was appointed as the Chairman of this committee, while esteemed scholars Zhang Boli, Li Lanjuan, Huang Luqi, and Liu Liang were designated as Vice Chairmen. The assembled experts and scholars jointly initiated and witnessed the launch of the Hengqin Grand Model for TCM Research, as well as the Intelligent Automation Integrated Innovation Platform for Novel Medicinal Preparations of TCM. Additionally, the establishment of the Professional Committee on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in TCM under the Guangdong Provincial Association of TCM was celebrated.
In his opening address, Chen Wenfeng emphasized that Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM), as one of the first batch of national "Double First-Class" universities, a key high-level university in Guangdong Province, and a jointly constructed institution by Guangdong Province, the Ministry of Education, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, provides fundamental support for the high-quality economic and social development through its own high-quality advancement. It contributes to the modernization of China by revitalizing and developing the cause of traditional Chinese medicine. In recent years, the university has focused on cultivating top-tier talent in traditional Chinese medicine in response to national strategic needs and regional development demands, providing a robust talent guarantee for the high-quality development of the industry. GZUCM adheres to the principles of original innovation and industrial transformation, emphasizing technological innovation in traditional Chinese medicine. It has established and is leveraging key national laboratories such as the National Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndromes, the Guangdong Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hengqin Laboratory), the National Medical Research and Production-Education-Research Integration Platform, and the State Key Laboratory of Dampness Syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine co-built by the province and the ministry. The university vigorously fosters and develops new forms of productivity, fully leveraging the diverse values and full-chain advantages of traditional Chinese medicine to serve high-quality development.As a major participant in the construction of the laboratory, GZUCM is confident in building the Guangdong Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine into a leading institution. The university will leverage its strengths in talent cultivation, scientific research, and international exchanges and cooperation to support the development of the Hengqin Laboratory. It is committed to supporting the Guangdong Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine in achieving high-starting-point, high-standard, and high-quality development, contributing to the construction of a leading hub for traditional Chinese medicine in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, advancing technological self-reliance and self-strengthening at a high level, and making its due contributions to the health of Guangdong and China as a whole.
During the interview, Wang Wei emphasized that the university possesses a comprehensive educational framework for TCM disciplines, complemented seamlessly by a network of prestigious affiliated hospitals. Going forward, the institution endeavors to establish strategic alliances with universities, research institutions, and healthcare entities across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. These collaborations will collectively propel innovation in laboratory research, drive industrialization, facilitate internationalization, and cultivate elite professionals at the forefront of TCM. Ultimately, this concerted effort will serve as a robust pillar, ensuring ample resources and unwavering support for the sustainable and high-quality development of the TCM industry globally.
Liu Liang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of Guangdong Laboratory of TCM (GDLTCM), elaborated that the laboratory places significant emphasis on the integration, application, and innovation of new-generation productivity-enhancing technologies, with a core focus on artificial intelligence, multi-omics, and multi-mass spectrometry analysis. Its aspiration is to transform GDLTCM into a generator of innovative scientific and technological advancements in TCM, an empowering platform for the development of high-end TCM products, a supportive server driving the high-quality growth of the TCM industry, and a vital connector bridging TCM to the global stage. By doing so, the laboratory endeavors to propel TCM's technological and industrial advancements towards new heights.
In his media interview, Zhang Zhongde stated that the Guangdong Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Sciences, as a pivotal participant, will collaborate intimately with Guangdong Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (GDLTCM) in the future to foster interdisciplinary integration, collaborative innovation, and joint research endeavors. By harnessing their complementary strengths and resources, they aspire to embark on groundbreaking research that integrates traditional Chinese and Western medical disciplines, encompassing investigations into the prevention and management of significant chronic diseases leveraging traditional Chinese medicine, delving into the study of traditional Chinese medical syndromes, pioneering the development of novel therapeutic agents, and innovating modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment rooted in TCM. Their overarching objective is to elevate the laboratory into a formidable driving force that propels the innovative development of TCM.
On that day, members of the Academic Committee shared insightful academic viewpoints encompassing various dimensions: the original theoretical foundations of TCM, strategies for the prevention and treatment of critical illnesses, the development of innovative traditional Chinese medicinal drugs, advancements in the creation of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment grounded in TCM principles, in-depth interpretations of the mechanisms underpinning syndrome differentiation and treatment, the process of new drug creation, as well as the dynamics of international scientific and technological competition. Their contributions amounted to a comprehensive "pulse diagnosis and prescription" tailored specifically for the development of the Guangdong Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, thereby contributing significantly to the promotion of high-quality development within the realm of TCM.
