Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Hosts Summit on the Education and Teaching of Traditional Chinese Medicine Classics and Seminar for Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers

To better inherit and elevate the status of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classics, and to further raise the pedagogical standards of TCM classics in our university, on April 19th, the Summit on the Education and Teaching of TCM Classics and Seminar for Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers, which is part of the series of events for the centennial celebration, was held in the Academic Lecture Hall 201 of the office building on the University Town campus. Wang Wei, President of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, attended and delivered a speech. At the symposium, a multitude of renowned experts and scholars delivered academic presentations, and young and middle-aged backbone teachers from the university shared and exchanged their experiences and insights in teaching TCM classics.

Wang Wei pointed out that TCM classics are the wellspring of cultural confidence for TCM and the root for its heritage, innovation, and development.

To promote the high-quality development of TCM cause in our country, it is essential to enhance the education of TCM classics and establish an educational system that can effectively integrate TCM classics teaching, scientific research, and clinical practice, with the aim of cultivating more high-quality TCM talents.

Professor Feng Quansheng from Chengdu University of Chinese Medicine presented a report entitled Reform and Practice in the Education and Teaching of TCM Classic Discipline: A New Quality Productive Force Perspective. He analyzed the reasons why the theories of TCM classics have not been effectively developed and undergone qualitative change in the modern field of TCM. He proposed suggestions such as building a high-level faculty team, optimizing the professional title structure, and innovating the system of TCM classic courses.

Professor He Juan from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine delivered an insightful report with the title Discrimination and Reconstitution: A Discussion on the Dual Medical Paradigms within the Huangdi Neijing. During the presentation, she meticulously categorized and provided a detailed analysis of the medical systems encapsulated in the ancient medical text, specifically focusing on somatic medicine, visceral medicine, and the medicine of correspondence between heaven and man

Professor Chen Ming from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine delivered a speech themed Regulating the Viscera and Bowels According to Symptoms Manifested. Starting with the application of classic prescriptions from Jin Gui Yao Lue and Shang Han Lun, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the location and nature of diseases in clinical practice and advocated for the principle of treatment based on symptom differentiation.

Professor Li Saimei from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine presented a report entitled Nurturing the Foundations and Shaping the Spirit: A Five-Dimensional Innovative Approach to Building and Implementing the Curriculum of Shang Han Lun.

She imparted her teaching experience and curriculum construction on Shang Han Lun, underscored its foundational role within the TCM course framework and discussed the innovative approaches for teaching reform.

Dean Li Hui from the School of Basic Medicine made a concluding speech, in which he emphasized the teaching of TCM classics is the cornerstone of TCM education. He stated that through expert enlightenment, peer discussions, and other interactive segments, the forum provided a rich intellectual feast for the faculty and students. He hoped that the teaching of TCM classics will reach a new level of excellence through this forum.

The Seminar for Young and Middle-aged Backbone Teachers held in the afternoon was presided over by Deputy Dean Liu Peng of the School of Basic Medicine. During the meeting, Associate Professor Xu Sunjing emphasized that the teaching of Shang Han Lun plays a significant role in constructing pattern differentiation thinking. Professor Xu Guofeng introduced the characteristics and treatment methods of the outpatient department for incurable and miscellaneous diseases at the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM. Professor Huang Pingdong pointed out that the construction of TCM classic textbooks should focus on the principle of integrating theory with practice. Lecturer Lin Changfeng shared case studies and methods in teaching the classics of Wenbing (Warm Diseases). Associate Professor Zhang Xiaohu suggested that the teaching of Huangdi Neijing should focus on the cohesiveness of its theoretical framework and delve into its inherent philosophical insights. He advocated for a reinforcement on the learning of original texts and encouraged the application of case studies to enrich the learning experience. In response to the “blank space” phenomenon in the writing of TCM classics, Lecturer Deng Ye proposed the importance of maintaining consistency between the content of classic courses and the original text of ancient books. During the discussion session, representatives from school of clinical medicine and officers from the Department of Academic Affairs exchanged views on TCM classic teaching and TCM classic level examination.

The triumphant organization of this summit and seminar solidified the foundation for the construction of the university’s TCM classic disciplines. On the occasion of the centennial celebration, the university will continue to promote the inheritance and innovation of TCM classics, cultivate more high-quality talents in the field of TCM, and contribute to the development of the TCM cause.
