On March 17th, the 2024 the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) Chinese Acupuncture - Moxibustion Research Academic Symposium and the Establishment Conference of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Acupuncture-Moxibustion Alliance were held in Xiaolan, Zhongshan. The conference was jointly sponsored by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine(GZUCM) and the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies, co-sponsored by Faculty of Chinese Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences of the University of Macau, and co-organized by Macau Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association, the Science and Technology Committee of the World Acupuncture and Moxibustion Federation, the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Research Center of GZUCM, ZUO Changbo International Acupuncture and Moxibustion Research Center of GZUCM, Zhongshan Health Bureau, and Zhongshan Chen Xinghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital.

LIU Baoyan, President of WFAS and Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, CHEN Wenfeng, Secretary of the CPC GZUCM Committee, Professor YU Xiaochun, President of the Chinese Acupuncture-Moxibustion Association, Executive Committee Member and Deputy Secretary-General of WFAS, Chief Researcher of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Professor Gordon Guyatt, Academician of the Royal Society of Canada, Professor XU Nenggui, Chief Scientist of National 973 Program Project, Honorary Vice President of the Chinese Acupuncture-Moxibustion Association, and Director of the Acupuncture-Moxibustion Research Center at GZUCM, Huang Hanwei, Secretary of CPC Committee and President of Zhongshan ChEN Xinghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital, and other leaders attended and delivered speeches.

“For a long time, GZUCM has been rooted in the land of southern Guangdong, based on the advantages of being adjacent to the Hong Kong and Macao regions, and has continuously strengthened cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine among the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao regions, actively participating in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a highland of traditional Chinese medicine. Today, GZUCM has become a bridge and highland for communication, mutual growth, and mutual promotion in the traditional Chinese medicine circles of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao,” “The construction of the Greater Bay Area and the development of traditional Chinese medicine are both national strategies and ‘the biggest issues’ of China. For acupuncture and moxibustion technicians in the Greater Bay Area, it is more than a great opportunity.” CHEN Wenfeng emphasized that Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine wound give full play to its advantages in scientific and technological innovation of traditional Chinese medicine, continuously increase the conversion of scientific research achievements, vigorously cultivate and develop new-quality productive forces, strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation with the acupuncture and moxibustion industry in Hong Kong and Macao, jointly promote the modernization, internationalization, and industrialization of traditional Chinese medicine, and build Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a highland of traditional Chinese medicine.

LIU Yanbao stated that the development of international acupuncture-moxibustion required continuous innovation and keeping pace with the times. Acupuncture-moxibustion had been applied in 196 countries and regions around the world. Its therapy was gradually being recognized and accepted more widely, contributing a unique treatment model to the global medical field. Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion had become world acupuncture and moxibustion, the most widely used traditional medicine in the world. He hoped that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao university Acupuncture and moxibustion Alliance would further promote the exchange and cooperation of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, expand the application fields of its therapy, attract more international first-class scholars and researchers to promote the international development of acupuncture and moxibustion.

“The alliance will be devoted to the research and innovation of acupuncture and muxibustion technology, strengthening the exchange and cooperation of its academic research, and actively participating in the development planning of national and local traditional Chinese medicine,” said Professor XU Nenggui. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao strategic highland of traditional Chinese medicine not only had rich resources and profound cultural heritage of traditional Chinese medicine but also had strong scientific research capabilities and innovation abilities. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Acupuncture-moxibustion Alliance would adhere to the spirit of openness, cooperation, and innovation, continuously expand cooperation fields, deepen cooperation content, promote the deep integration of acupuncture-muxibustion technology and academic research, instill new impetus into the development of acupuncture-muxibustion discipline, and jointly promote the prosperity of the discipline. At the same time, it would actively explore the application of acupuncture-musibustion technology in other fields, expand the application scope of its discipline, and provide better traditional Chinese medicine quality services to the people.

Professor Gordon Guyatt, father of evidence-based medicine, acknowledged in a video greeting that acupuncture was the cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine. The establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Acupuncture Alliance signified the integration, exchange of professional knowledge and the practice of evidence-based medicine, which would surely elevate acupuncture-muxibustion to new heights and improve the treatment effects of patients worldwide.

President HUANG Hanwei stated that Zhongshan CHENG xinhai Integrated Chinese and Western hospital was the first tertiary A-level Chinese-Western Medicine Hospital jointly built by Guangdong and Hong Kong, one of the first hospitals in the mainland to implement the “Hong Kong and Macao Pharmaceutical Equipment Access” policy, and a pilot hospital in the Greater Bay Area for the Hong Kong “Elderly Medical Voucher” program. It undertook the work of connecting Hong Kong and Macao in inheriting and exchanging Chinese and Western medicine cultures. After becoming a member of the Alliance, it would continue to make good use of its own resources and platform advantages in Hong Kong and Macao, strengthen cooperation with universities and research institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, jointly carry out research projects in the field of acupuncture-moxibustion, explore the advantages and mechanisms of acupuncture-moxibustion in integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment, promote the conversion and application of research achievemnts, and promote the application and popularization of acupuncture-moxibustion technology in broader fields.

The Secretary-General of WAFS announces the list of members of the new session of the Science and Technology Committee of WAFS and issued certificates. Professor XU Nenggui announced the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Acupuncture-Moxibustion Alliance.ZUO Changbo, Director of the ZUO Changbo International Acupuncture-Moxibustion Research Center, president of the Macau Acupuncture-Muxibustion Society, announced the first China Acupuncture-Moxibustion Development Lifetime Achievement Award.

A plaque award ceremony for alliance member was also held at the conference. Leaders such as LIU Baoyan, CHEN Wenfeng, and LAI Wensheng present plaques to member units.

With the theme of “jointly building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Acupuncture-Moxibustion Alliance and deeply participating in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a highland of traditional Chinese medicine," the conference had attracted nearly 300 experts and scholars in the field of acupuncture-moxibustion from well-known overseas universities and hospitals to jointly explore academic frontiers and share a knowledge feast.

On the evening of March 16th , WTAS Science and Technology Committee successfully had its term of office changed. Professor XU Nenggui is re-elected as the Chairman of the Science and Technology Committee of WFAS.G uangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macau is determined as the leading units of the alliance, and Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhongshan CHEN Xinghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital, and 18 other hospitals were determined as member units of the alliance.
