On January 20, the Annual Academic Conference of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS) for the year 2023 was grandly held at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM). The conference was hosted by the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, organized by GZUCM, and co-hosted by Guangdong Chinese Medicine Museum. The conference was held both online and offline, with 300 experts at home and abroad discussing the inheritance and development of TCM culture. This conference was the first event held by GZUCM in a series of centenary celebration events.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Xu Sheng, the Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS. Chen Wenfeng, Secretary of the CPC GZUCM Committee, attended and delivered a welcome speech. Pan Ping, Deputy Secretary-General of WFCMS, and Guo Hongwei, the President of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, attended the conference and gave speeches.

Chen Wenfeng pointed out that culture is the soul of a nation, determining its future. TCM culture is an important part of China’s outstanding traditional culture. Since the 18th National Congress of the Party, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, has attached great importance to the innovative development of culture. TCM, as a representative of excellent traditional Chinese culture, further realizes innovation and development on the basis of inheriting excellent traditional Chinese culture, which complements and promotes each other with the vigorous promotion of excellent traditional Chinese culture. Since its origin in September 1924, when it was established as the Guangdong Specialized College of Chinese Medicine, GZUCM has been one of the first four higher education institutions offering TCM bachelor’s degrees in New China. The university has been committed to TCM education, inheritance, and innovative development for a century, maintaining uninterrupted education, passing on the torch of nurturing talents, and inspiring generations of professionals from GZUCM to forge ahead. It has successively become one of the first universities for national “Double First-Class” construction, a key construction university for high-level universities in Guangdong Province, and a jointly constructed university of provincial and ministerial authorities. The university actively serves the national and regional development strategy, contributing to the construction of the TCM highland in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Chen Wenfeng expressed that GZUCM has long attached importance to the inheritance and innovation of TCM culture. The university’s museum, Guangdong Chinese Medicine Museum, has become a national second-class museum after years of construction, taking the lead in the TCM industry. Hosting the academic conference of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS at GZUCM is a recognition of the university’s level of education and conference organizing capabilities, as well as an affirmation of the university’s achievements in cultural construction. He hopes to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the university and the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, jointly promoting the inheritance of TCM culture, and contributing to the revitalization and development of the TCM cause.
Presentation of Report on the Development of Recreation Sojourn in China (2023)
After the opening ceremony, Lin Bin, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee and Vice President of GZUCM, presided over the presentation ofReport on the Development of Recreation Sojourn in China (2023)and the donation ceremony for the centenary celebration.Report on the Development of Recreation Sojourn in China (2023)is the first comprehensive report in the “Blue Book of Recreation Sojourn” series on the development of the recreation sojourn industry, representing a significant research achievement in the field. At the presentation, Professor Hou Shengtian from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Researcher Lan Shaoqing from GZUCM, chief editors, shared the creative research process and main contents of the book. In the donation ceremony for the centenary celebration, Xu Sheng, President of Guangshengyuan Traditional Chinese Medicine Co., Ltd., Professor Zhang Reyun, Dean of the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Academy of Chaozhou Natives Overseas Association of Beijing, and Liu Siyi, Senior Engineer from Pharmaceutical Museum, China Pharmaceutical University, donated wild Hengshan Astragalus, purple wisteria ceramic jars, and TCM cultural relics from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China to enrich the collection of the Guangdong Chinese Medicine Museum.
The 2023 Annual Academic Conference of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS was divided into two sessions:“Keynote Speeches”and“Academic Seminar on TCM Culture”. In the “Keynote Speeches” session held in the morning, Professor Sun Guangrong, National TCM Master and Honorary President of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, was invited to give a keynote speech on “Promoting the Culture and the High-quality Development of Chinese Medicine”. Professor Zhang Qicheng, Honorary President of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, made a keynote speech on “Spiritual and Cultural Exploration and Digital Construction of Chinese Medicine”, and Liu Changhua, Academic Consultant of the Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS, made a keynote speech on “Study on Ba and Shi Methods inTianhui Medical Bamboo Slips: An Exploration of the History of Pre-Qin Medicine”. In the “Academic Seminar on TCM Culture” session held in the afternoon, eight experts from China, the United States and France made wonderful and rich academic reports.
TCM culture has a long history and is colorful. TCM culture represents outstanding traditional Chinese culture, the inheritance and development of which is the cultural mission of the new era.The Chinese Medicine Culture Committee of WFCMS aims to build a platform for the exchange, dissemination, and development of TCM culture with countries worldwide by promoting TCM culture, contributing to the revitalization and inheritance of national culture. This conference will undoubtedly further promote the inheritance and innovation of TCM culture and contribute to the realization of the strategic goal of a Healthy China.
